Monte-Carlo Masters: Daniil Medvedev suffers astonishing 6-0 6-0 defeat in 49 minutes to Matteo Berrettini

Daniil Medvedev suffered an astonishing 6-0 6-0 defeat in 49 minutes to Matteo Berrettini at the Monte-Carlo Masters on Wednesday.

Medvedev won just 17 points as former Wimbledon finalist Berrettini became the first ATP player to win a match without losing a single game against a top 10 player in 10 years.

Wild card Berrettini was ruthlessly efficient against an out-of-sorts Medvedev, who did not have a single game point on his serve in the match.

It is the first time Medvedev has lost a tour-level match without winning a game and he has now lost 10 sets 6-0 in his career.

After falling 6-0 2-0 down, Medvedev lost his cool and let his frustrations out on his racket, hurling it to the back of the court, then picking it back up, and smashing it on the ground before calmly placing it into the bin.

The former world No 1 ended the match with 28 unforced errors.

Jamie Murray, speaking to Your Site Tennis:

"It is shocking and it shouldn't happen but it did," said Murray, a two-time Grand Slam doubles champion. "I don't know how much effect that will have on him going forward but I'm sure he will be pretty embarrassed walking back to the locker room and I'd be wanting to get off site pretty quickly, I think, if that was the performance I put in today.

"Medvedev played so well in Indian Wells [reaching the final]. He talks about it not being his favourite surface and the difficulties that he has on it.

"He won it Rome, so if you win in Rome, you can play on clay so it was a big surprise to see him go down a couple of eggs there.

"Fair play to Berrettini for doing that because it's not an easy thing to do."

"I think it was one of the best performances of my life," former world No 6 Berrettini said. "I think I missed three shots in the entire match and it is not easy against a tricky player like Daniil. I think the game plan was perfect and my weapons were working.

"I faced two break points in the first game and then after that, it felt I was playing better than him. I was not expecting to win zero, zero like that. But I kept my focus as I know one break or two breaks is not enough sometimes, so I kept pushing."

The last player to achieve a 6-0 6-0 scoreline against a top 10 player was when David Goffin defeated Tomas Berdych at the Rome Masters in 2016.

It's only the fifth time in the Open Era an ATP player has won 6-0 6-0 against a top 10 player.

"I have been playing for a long time, so I felt it was really important to hold my serve at the start of the second set," Berrettini added.

"It is a matter of a few points at the start and then when you go up two breaks you are more relaxed and the ball is [flying] out of your racquet."
